Space Antennas

Two weeks ago I did visit the exhibition NASA - A Human Adventure at the Technical Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. An exhibition with not only scale models from space exploration history, but also full scale models that cannot be distinguished from the original ones. As a radio amateur I had special interest in some of the antennas being shown :-) This is the Russian Lunokhod (Moon walker) with is solar panel lid flung open. One antenna half is an ordinary helix UHF antenna, but what is the purpose of the other half? Anyone knows? The Lunar Rover´s umbrella antenna has a black strange object at its back. What is it? Hunting Schumann Resonances

Quote Wikipedia : The Schumann resonances are a set of spectrum peaks in the extremely low frequency portion of the Earth's electromagnetic field spectrum. Schumann resonances are global electromagnetic resonances, excited by lightning discharges in the cavity formed by the Earth's surface and the ionosphere. This global electromagnetic resonance phenomenon is named after physicist Winfried Otto Schumann who predicted it mathematically in 1952. Schumann resonances occur because the space between the surface of the Earth and the conductive ionosphere acts as a closed waveguide . The limited dimensions of the Earth cause this waveguide to act as a resonant cavity for electromagnetic waves . The cavity is naturally excited by electric currents in lightning. ROS - A new digital mode

ROS, developed by José Albert Nieto Ros, is a new digital mode under test. Using spread spectrum and 1 or 16 Baud signalling rates it is designed to cope with disturbancies, low level signals, meteor scatter and moon bounce says José. He claims that receiving signals down to -35 dB (!) with 1 Bd signalling rate and -30 dB (!) with 16 Bd are possible. Today I tested 16 Bd reception on 14.1011 MHz. My set-up is shown above with the PC microphone close to a Yaesu FT-857D. This PC screen dump shows that I did receive PA0JMK in The Netherlands calling YU1RP in Yugoslavia. Unfortunately the vertical screen resolution of my mini-PC is not large enough to show the waterfall part of the ROS GUI.
