Boden Fortress - A long time secret place in Sweden

During the first world war the secret Boden Fortress was completed with its five very huge forts blasted into mountains surrounding Boden city in northern Sweden. They all were abunded as late as in 1998. The Rödberget fort is now a major tourist attraction in Boden. Björn, SM0YUZ knows a lot of these places and he took me on a guided tour to some of them. Many photos can be seen here (sorry text in Swedish) and here you can read the fascinating story of Boden Fortress. Björn, SM0YUZ standing in front of the huge Stora Åberget fort. The ugly Radiobunkern in Boden Fortress is a historical site as it was from here in 1921 the first public broadcast programmes in Sweden were transmitted. Link to an article in a Swedish newspaper.

The TRIO HAMCLOCK HC-1

When visiting a flea market in town Boden in northern Sweden yesterday I did not expect to find any ham radio gear. But, there it was. I recognized it instantly. It was a japanese clock from the 70´s and designed for use by radio amateurs and manfactured by TRIO (Kenwood) in 1971. With this clock it is possible to see local time for different country call areas incl. GMT (UTC). The summertime was not invented in 1971 so no summertime with this watch. Nor the quartz clock was invented at that time. It is a fully mechanical watch. The battery winds the mainspring every 8 minutes. Would the clock start after possible 40 years not in use? Yes it did! This clock will definitively remain in my shack. .

Yesterday I and Second Op. Pepita went to the Swedish nature reserve Storforsen . This reserve´s rapids in northern Sweden are the biggest in the Nordic countries. Here you can watch a short shaky video from our visit. I brought with me a Yaesu FT-857D transceiver in order to hunt for the SMFF Award . Up here in the north the HF bands are almost dead, but I managed to contact two CW stations on the 40 m band, SM5CNQ and OH3BHL. Hunting for the SMFF Award has been increasingly popular in Sweden since its start in April this year. SMFF stands for Swedish Flora Fauna. It is about having radio contacts with hams in nature reserves/national parks. In Sweden there are about 3,500 of them. Some of them are easy to reach by car and some needs long walk to reach.
