J 8A Gloster Gladiator

The first Swedish air defence wing, F 8 Barkaby near Stockholm, was etsablished in 1938. The British biplane fighter Gloster Gladiator was chosen to equip the new wing, and 55 aircraft were ordered. Twelve fighters made up the voluntary wing F 19, that supported the Finnish Air Force during the war against Russia in 1940.

This aircraft at the Swedish Air Force Museum come back to Sweden from Finland in March 1940. The swastika emblem had nothing to do with the Nazi one. It was first used on a Finnish army aircraft in 1918. Photo 29 May 2008
