Bugs

I enjoyed very much reading "Infested with Bugs" by Mike Ferro, N6GND in the February 2011 issue of CQ Amateur Radio . It is about how to adjust and operate three different kind of bug cw keyers. I have two bugs in my possession. I have never used them. Because they looked too complicated I believe. This bug, the BUG 140 , manfactured by a Swedish company in the 1940´s is a copy of the American MAC Key bug. This bug is also a Swedish one, built by SM4WAW, Karlo Eleven. Yesterday I was invited to have lunch with Göran, SM5XW and his XYL and also some of their friends. Göran is a former chairman of the Swedish Amateur Radio Society, SSA . Göran lives a walking distance from my QTH and he told me that Ingemar, SM0AIG would be there. Ingemar is the editor of the SSA web site. He is also the President of the Swedish High Speed Club, SMHC . I happened to know that Ingemar can operate a bug. So I brought with me my two bugs hoping that Ingemar maybe could show ...

NAC 432 MHz

Yesterday evening, June 8, it was time for the monthly NAC Tuesday contest, this time on 432 MHz. As on the NAC 144 MHz I choosed a location in the QTH locator square JO98. This time on the Muskö island. The island is connected to the mainland by a long road tunnel below (!) sea level in the Baltic sea. I was active for only 2 hours. Not so many mosquitos this time and I heard the Corncrake bird (kornknarr) for the first time in my life. The conditions were not so good and the QTH, almost at sea level, is not so suitable for working UHF. Musköbasen , one of the largest underground naval bases in the world was built on Muskö island during the cold war in the 60´s. Nowadays the the ship maintenace work is privatized and the Swedish Navy still have some activities there. The former navy center on Muskö is moved to Karlskrona in southestern Sweden. Field Day on Seskarö Island

Yesterday it was nice and warm up here in northern Sweden. Lisbeth, her grandchild Liz, Keeshond Pepita, Tibetan Terrier Totte and I went for a short ham radio field day visit on Seskarö Island. This annual field day between 3-5 August is arranged by Kalix Radio Club SK2HG . From my QTH in Boden as SM0FOB/2 it was a 150 km drive to the east near the boarder to Finland. We arrived in the afternoon. About 20 hams had already arrived on this first day. Among them also hams from Finland. The site is located very close to the Baltic Sea with a nice beach and camping facilities. ... Hamburgers are being prepared around the corner and one year old Liz is getting proper assistance with her dinner meal... Dipole antennas were in place high up between trees with help of this air pumped "rifle". The red ammunition are attached to a fishing nylon line when fired. Kalle, SM2K is preparing hamburgers at faster rate than a McDonald´s restaurant can do! This nice guy...
